VARK Learning Style Analysis
The VARK learning preference tool provides individuals with information that they can utilize to enhance their learning process by helping them to study more effectively and efficiently. The VARK tool consists of a questionnaire that the learner takes to identify which senses the individual uses to capture and process information, and serves as a guide to assist the individual to improve their learning by providing a summary of their preferred learning style. The read/write learner is advised to: develop lists, make outlines, obtain study guides, take notes, and write words to the notes several times. It is also recommended to read notes silently, rewrite and paraphrase ideas into other words. Converting graphs, charts, and diagrams into worded statements help the student with a strong read/write preference to understand the meanings contained in the visual material. Meaning is found in words; therefore the student with a read/write learning preference should search for words that describe the meaning of a concept by breaking the concept into textual points. (Fleming, n.d.).
The previously mentioned recommended learning strategies for the very strong read/write learning preference of this student compare near-perfectly with the strategies currently in use. This student however, frequently incorporates visual approaches to writing by using different colored highlighters to categorize and connect different thoughts. Sticky notes, often having various bright colors, adorn books, periodicals, Bibles, and even the course syllabus for this class. Often when communicating in writing with others, words are circled followed by arrows that point to a reply the writer has written. VARK Analysis
Every one has a mix of learning styles; some people may find that they have a dominant style of learning, with far less use of other styles in different circumstances. There is neither right or wrong style nor your style is fixed, you can develop your less dominant style and make improvement in your dominant ones. Your learning styles have more influence on your learning than you know it, they guide the way you learn. They also change the way you retain information and perceive experiences internally ("Overview of Learning Styles," n.d). In read/ write style of learning the strategies that I use are reading the books and journals and write the notes in points and the suggested strategies are to write in multiple choice questions and essays to prepare for the exam and also rewrite in different words again and again to get the maximum understanding of the topic. Lastly, in my kinesthetic way of learning, I used trial and error and experiments to learn better and the suggested strategies state the same. In addition, I should relate the topics with real life examples and case studies to grasp the concept even deeper.
By taking this questionnaire, I have recognized and understood my learning styles and strategies even better and I learned new strategies within my learning styles that I was unaware of before taking this questionnaire. In my aural learning style, I learned that I can even record my self talking about the topic and listen to it again later, saying the answers out loud will also help when I am trying to recall my voices. Also learned that by pretending to talk to my examiner or instructor will give me deeper insight of the topic.
