If you’re grades are less than stellar, this won’t come as shocking news: Not having a great GPA will disqualify you from a number of scholarships.

Blend an average GPA with non-involvement in sports or extracurricular activities and a lack of rare qualities (like an unusual height or ethnicity) and it may seem like no scholarships exist for you. Well, that couldn’t be further from the truth.

Even if you may have slacked a bit in high school, you can still find ways to finance your higher education.

By Christopher Widman, MoodBoard

Don’t worry about that pesky grade point average thing when applying for these five scholarships. Just get to it!

Here are just five of the many scholarships that don’t require a good GPA (and even if you have a good GPA, you can still apply).

1. No Essay Scholarship

Perhaps more than anyone, College Prowler offers ongoing hope for college students with its $2,000 “No Essay” College Scholarship.

This monthly scholarship simply requires you to fill out an online form and hope for the best, because the winner is chosen via a random drawing.

No fancy GPA or essay required. Just knowing basic information about yourself (like your name and birthday) and how to type could get you some sweet college tuition moola. You can apply every month for this scholarship, which is open to “high schoolers, adults looking to head back to school, current college students and anyone else looking to attend college or graduate school within 12 months,” according to the website.

Not applying seems foolish, don’t you think?

2. $1,000 Every Month Scholarship

You know how you got super excited about the College Prowler scholarship I listed above? Yeah, get excited again because GotChosen’s $1,000 monthly scholarship is nearly the same thing, just less money.

Open to U.S. and international students over 18 years of age, this scholarship asks you to register with GotChosen (painless) and enter the monthly random drawing. Applying doesn’t require a good GPA, essay or long form — just taking a gamble. And not like Vegas blackjack gambling either, because you’ve really got nothing to lose.

And you’re waiting for…what? No excuse really suffices.

3. AFSA $20,000 Scholarship

Can you read? Then you may be able to win this scholarship.

The American Fire Sprinkler Association (AFSA) offers $20,000 in scholarships (ten winners at $2,000 each) to the 10 high school students (U.S. citizens or legal residents) whose names pop up in a drawing.

But here’s the kicker: You have to read a six-page document on the fire sprinkler industry and take a ten-question multiple choice test. It’s open book and each correct answer scores you an entry into the drawing (10 is the most entries you can have). You even get a chance to correct wrong answers, which doesn’t happen often with tests.

Who knows, maybe it will even inspire you to join the fire sprinkler industry in the process.

4. A GPA Isn’t Everything Monthly Scholarship

It’s unclear just how one wins Cappex’s $1,000 “A GPA Isn’t Everything” Monthly Scholarship but it seems obvious in the name — it’s not your GPA.

Like other scholarships on this list, applying simply requires you to fill out basic information about yourself and your educational background and college plans. It’s available for students currently enrolled in high school or college or those who plan to attend school in the next 12 months. There’s one winner, with a deadline at the end of each month.

Still believe GPA is everything?

5. Zinch’s weekly scholarship

If the above monthly and annual scholarships aren’t enough to cheer you up regarding your GPA situation, then perhaps Zinch’s $1,000 weekly scholarship will. Besides, it is more fun than most scholarships.

Open to American high school or college students who are at least 16-years-old, this scholarship requires you to enter basic information about yourself and answer a short essay question. And they do mean short — 280 characters or less (similar to Twitter format, but just a tad bit longer). You may be asked to interpret a historical passage and what it means to you or something entirely different. The essay topic changes weekly. You can apply once a week, every week.

Worst case scenario: You get the fun challenge of answering an interesting question in a few short sentences. Best case scenario: You win a scholarship. It’s essentially a win-win.

So you may not have done well in high school or college thus far or didn’t do anything else that typically qualifies someone for a scholarship — so what? You can always do those things from now on and still land a scholarship or two along the way. Your past academic performance doesn’t have to interfere with your future schooling.

Don’t hesitate, though: Some of these scholarships probably have a deadline coming soon. Land some of that free money that the high GPA, athlete-types have been hogging for so long. You may even get the confidence to strike out on your own and find even more scholarships you’re qualified for.
