If a student is looking for a free English essay to use as a research document or as the basis for his/her own document, he/she must first understand what the topic of his/her assignment is so that he/she can focus on finding free reports that suit the needs of the topic. For example, if a student needs to complete an essay on Hamlet, he/she should look for documents that were written specifically on the topic of Hamlet. However, some students will have to write their English research papers merely as a writing exercise to help them develop their writing skills. In such a case, a professor may allow students to select any topic that they would like. Students will then have to write effective and convincing documents that are well-planned and well-written.
Regardless of the reason that a student may have to write English research papers, he/she should always take a consistent approach. The student needs to decide on a topic (or make sure that he/she understands an assigned topic). The student then needs to perform a suitable amount of research into that topic.
Once a student is satisfied with his/her research, he/she may begin writing the report by developing the outline. It will provide the format and the content for the document and is an important step in any writing process.
Students should be sure that they edit their English research papers many times before the final draft. After all, when an English research paper is for an English course, the professor will not only pay attention to the content and format of the report, but also the student's language, vocabulary, and grammar.
If a student is enrolled in a graduate degree or PhD program, he/she will most likely have to create an English dissertation in order to graduate from the program. A dissertation is a normal requirement for graduation from upper-level academic programs and requires that students spend a great deal of time researching one particular topic or area of study.
Like with any subject, students creating English dissertations need to develop a plan before they can begin working on their documents. They should begin by defining which topic they would like to research. The students should then discuss these topics with their advisors. Many advisors will provide suggestions for modifying the English essay or English dissertation topic to suit a specific industry need or personal interest of the student.
After the topic has been well defined, the next step for all students writing English reports should involve research. Many students spend months researching just one topic. Their research may require them to travel, perform experiments, conduct interviews, and more. Therefore, students need to develop a practical plan to help them approach the research methodically and purposefully.
Students need to remember to keep organized and detailed notes as they perform their research. An English dissertation can often involve a variety of different resources that students need to keep organized so that they can remember what they learned from those resources when they begin to craft their actual English dissertations.

English coursework is the body of assignments required for an English class. There is a wide array of English coursework, but nearly all of it will demand significant work. English coursework will likely different from coursework for other courses—even coursework that requires considerable writing—because it will often require learners to write at a similar level of presentation and analysis as they would for essay assignments. English coursework can therefore be thought of as essay preparation or essays in miniature.
A very common English coursework assignment is a textual analysis, which is the close examination of a single text or textual excerpt. When doing textual analyses, learners should single out one or two aspects of the text to discuss—such as the text's tone, figurative language, diction, or form. These are all specific elements that contribute to the interpretation of a text.
Another prevalent English coursework requirement is a paraphrase. A paraphrase requires the student to put the words of a literary text in his/her own words. The best way to approach a paraphrase is to read the text sentence by sentence and write down what that sentence means, maintaining the same tone and voice as the author.
In composition courses, it's likely that a primary component of a student's English courseworks will be a series of journal entries or reflections. These short compositions should present the student's ideas or interpretations on the topics provided using the first-person voice. Journal entries and reflections are generally intended to be informal assignments.
Students in English classes will often be called on to do writing assignments that explicate a work's theme. These types of thematic analyses should attempt to uncover and explain themes in the text through the use of textual evidence. This includes both pointing to specific events in the text and using quotations.
Students studying writing will often be assigned English coursework intended to generate creativity. These assignments sometimes require the student to describe objects or people, consider a topic from an unusual perspective, or assume a different voice. These assignments should be performed with an open mind in order to allow creativity to flow freely.
All English coursework should be considered practice for larger writing exercises. Therefore, learners should carefully edit and proofread their work and attempt to develop the sophistication of their work. Every paragraph should begin with a strong topic sentence, every claim should be supported with evidence, and every sentence should be read for clarity.
Author Research Paper
Every year, thousands, perhaps millions, of English Literature students are faced with the same dilemma: how to write an author research paper. Yet, writing author research papers isn't nearly as daunting a task as it seems. With a little elbow grease and a bit of perseverance, writing an author research paper can be a rather enjoyable process.
Yet, many learners have no idea exactly what an author research paper actually is. Simply put, author research papers initiate investigation and discussion into various authors, author styles, and/or writing genres. An author research paper assignment might require that the student research the life of a particular author, his/her writing style, and/or one or more other aspects of that individual author. Yet another assignment might require that the student undertake such an investigation into the lives of several authors who share a common factor such as genre, writing style, or historical presence. Regardless of the variations in assignments, the author research paper is a way to help students understand writing and literature by encouraging them to explore a particular author, or group of authors.
Other than the topic, author research papers aren't much different from any other reference project. The paper must have an introduction, a body, and a conclusion. Included in the introduction should be a well-thought-out thesis statement, which is the basis of every reference project. The body paragraphs should support the thesis statement, and the conclusion should restate the thesis and pull all of the information together. How much space should be allotted for each section of the report depends on the length. A one-page author report should devote one paragraph each to the introduction and the conclusion, a two-page report should devote two paragraphs each, and so on.
Any difficulty in completing an author research paper comes from the actual requirements set forth by the instructor. Certainly the least intensive author research paper is the straight autobiographical paper. Students generally have very little difficulty finding enough references to put together a reasonable autobiographical author reference project.
More difficult to write is the author project that requires the student to delve into the style of one or more writers. Writing about style, motivation, or intent is far more difficult than exploring the events of an author's life. However, the course itself will generally provide the foundation for such a report before requiring students to present their own synopsis of an author's work.

How might you engage your reader by incorporating more figurative language (anecdote, narrative, simile, metaphor, dialogue, personification and such)? How might you offer more valid comparisons using these techniques?
“All the world’s a stage”—have you ever wondered why people remember and quote lines from Shakespeare so much? One of the reasons is because he used figurative language very effectively in his writings. You may have heard the term “figurative language” before, and perhaps when you heard it you were in a class analyzing novels or poetry. But figurative language is not just used in literature: you can employ it in your essay writing to great effect. Figurative language adds color to your writing by taking your words and applying them to other, often unexpected, objects or concepts. By using figurative language, you can create vivid images in your reader’s mind that will not only give your writing a more distinctive style and make it more enjoyable to read but will also help make your argument more convincing. So what exactly do these terms—metaphor, simile, and personification—mean, and how can they be used?
A metaphor is a figure of speech that identifies one thing with another. Metaphors do not use “like” or “as” but equate the two terms you are comparing. Effective metaphors capture your reader’s attention, and by creating strong, clear, interesting images, help the reader better understand and remember your point.
- The financial crisis in America was a tsunami whose waves of destruction battered the economies of countries all over the world.
- Racial injustice is a disease that never seems to be cured.
A simile is a particular type of metaphor that compares two objects that are essentially not like one another. A simile, unlike a metaphor, introduces this comparison with the words “like” or “as.” My essay’s introduction is like the first sip of a fine wine—that is a simile; My essay’s introduction is the first sip of a fine wine—that is a metaphor. Used sparingly, similes can help your statements stand out and evoke thought-provoking images for your reader:
- The fast food industry’s attempts to offer healthy menu options are like the 11th hour plea bargain of a death row inmate.
- "Writing a book is a horrible, exhausting struggle, like a long bout of some painful illness" (Orwell 316). 
Personification is giving animals, inanimate objects, and ideas human form, personality, or emotion. Though you would not want to employ personification too much in an essay (just as you also have to be careful about the frequency of your similes and metaphors—too many can make your writing tedious or pretentious), one or two uses of personification can make your writing more interesting and rhetorically effective.
- With funding tight in many school systems across the country, art programs are being pick-pocketed by science and math programs.
- The past will always come knocking on the politician’s door.
Here are some key things to remember when using figurative language:
- Make your images clear, precise, and understandable (you want to interest and maybe intrigue your reader, not confuse him/her).
- Stay away from clichéd comparisons (what’s the point of using figurative language if you’re just going to recycle the same tired metaphors?).
- Avoid using too much figurative language (a little goes a long way).
It would be a good idea to ask your classmate in a peer review session to evaluate your figurative language according to these criteria.
Figurative language can be used in any part of your paper. Because it is more dramatic and visual than a direct statement in everyday language, it enables you to better arrest your reader’s attention and perhaps cause him/her to pause and think more about your assertions. Metaphors, similes, and personification can help you better convey complex and abstract ideas because you are attaching these abstract ideas to an image and in that way making it more concrete and understandable. Figurative language can also just make your writing more pleasurable to read and consequently more likely to gain your reader’s thoughtful consideration. We all like to be entertained, even in just little ways, and are more likely to pay attention to things that seek to interest us.
