Math 120: Groups and Rings (Fall 2017)

This course covers groups, rings and fields. It will be a demanding, theoretical course and will move at a fast pace. Those interested in a less theoretical course should instead take Math 109.

Text: Abstract Algebra by Dummit and Foote, Third Edition
Office Hours: Mon 2:30-3:30 and Thurs 10:00-11:00 (MK, in Room 382-E). Weds 4:30-6:30 (JL in 380-N)
Office hours start in week 2, but in the first week there will be a special office hour from 4:30-5:30 on Friday (JL)
Homework: Weekly problem sets will be posted here each Friday and due in class the following Friday. Homework must be handed in at start of class. Late assignments will not be accepted. You are encouraged to discuss problems together, but should write out the problems individually and in your own words. The weakest problem set will be dropped from the final grade.
In addition, there will be roughly biweekly, online, short assignments available on Canvas , designed to test your reading (total of 6 online quizzes, you need to do 5 to get full marks). You will get full marks for any good-faith answer.
Writing the the Major (WIM): Math 120 is a writing in the major course. Paper topics will by posted here in due course. Papers should be written in LaTeX or something equivalent.
WIM Paper topics: Choose one of the following two topics. The length of the paper should be the equivalent of 3 pages typed (handwritten is allowed, but must be easily legible). Describe the background, some motivation and give clear proofs of the main results.
Topic 1) Normal series, the Schreier Refinement Theorem and the proof of the Jordan-Hölder Theorem.
Topic 2) Burnside's Lemma with an application to at least one counting problem (e.g. colourings)

Midterm: 8th November, 7:00-9:00 PM in Room 380-Y Midterm Solutions
Final: 13th December, 3:30-6:30 PM in Room 381-S (Confirmed)

Syllabus: Groups acting on sets, examples of finite groups, Sylow theorems and simple groups. Fields, rings, and ideals; polynomial rings over a field; PID and non-PID. Unique factorization domains.
